Political System:
Austria is a federal republic state with a parliamentary democracy.
The federal legislation is exercised by the national council (Nationalrat)
together with the Upper House of Parliament (Bundesrat) - the two
chambers of Parliament. The head of state is the federal president
whereas the head of government is the federal chancellor.
Head of Sate:
Since July 1992 Thomas Klestil is Austria's Head of State.
Head of Government:
Since February 2000 Wolfgang Schüssel is the Head of Government.
Administrative Divisions:
Austria compromises nine independent federal States (Bundesländer):
Burgenland, Carinthia (Kärnten), Lower Austria (Niederösterreich),
Upper Austria (Oberösterreich), Salzburg, Styria (Steiermark),
Tyrol (Tirol), Vorarlberg and Vienna (Wien).
Capital:
Austria's federal capital is Vienna with a population of 1.6
million.
National Holiday:
Austria's National Holiday is the 26th of October.
Legal System:
Austrian law is based on the civil system with Roman law
origins.
