In 2002 Austria's population was estimated to be 8,2 million. Annual
population growth was estimated at 0.23%. 88% are Austrian's. Other
residents include Croatians, Slovenes, Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks
and Romanians.), 2% are naturalized (includes those who have lived
in Austria at least three generations).
Religions
A majority of 78% of Austria's population is Roman Catholic. 5% are
Protestants and 17% belong to other religions.
Languages
Austria's official language is German.
Education
The formal state education system in Austria comprises primary
school ("Volksschule", ages 6-10), After primary school
parents can choose to send their children either to secondary school
("Hauptschule", ages 10-14), followed by polytechnics
("Polytechnikum", ages 14-15) or to grammar school
("Gymnasium or Mittelschule"). Pupils will graduate with a
baccalaureate ("Matura") at the age of 18, which permits
them to go to university. Austria's population is highly literate
98%.
