About Ebensee

Ebensee is located in the Upper Austrian part of the Salzkammergut. It is situated on the Traunsee, an attractive lake, which offers good opportunities for boating and walking.

Ebensee's nearby mountains are however the key attraction. A cable-car leads up to the Feuerkogel.

The Feuerkogel offers plenty of great opportunities for walking and trekking. As many of the walks are not very steep, they can be suitable for children as well as for adults. In winter the Feuerkogel is a popular skiing destination, offering opportunities for the beginner as well as for the more experienced skier.

Highlights in Summer

Not to miss are the many attractive Christmas markets in Austria. Almost every city and town has their own traditional Christmas market.

Wildlife and Nature
The Feuerkogel offers some beautiful flora and fauna, and is home to many protected alpine plants as well as wildlife such as the local salamander, a small black lizard.

Culture
Several festivals take place during the year. They offer an excellent opportunity to admire the beautiful Austrian traditional national and regional dresses and local dances. Ebensee hosts the Gloecknerlauf parade.

Hotels and Accommodation
Ebensee and the Feuerkogel offer a range of hotels, guesthouses (similar to B&B) and chalets. Prices start from around 20 Euros per night. Reservation is essential during high season, particularly during school holidays in summer and in winter, and during times of festivals and events. The Feuerkogel has one 3 Star hotel - Hotel Edelweiss and several guesthouses.
Eating
Restaurants and Gasthauses
Ebensee
Ebensee, like most of Austria's cities, towns and villages, offers a good selection of restaurants with local and international cuisine. Very traditional Austrian food like Schweinebraten, can be found in typical Austrian eating establishments (perhaps best described as the restaurant for the local people, usually with good atmosphere, friendliness, nicely decorated, and home-cooked food), which are called "Gasthaus".

Feuerkogel
At the Feuerkogel you can enjoy traditional Austrian food and international cuisine either at the Hotel Edelweiss or at some of the guesthouses and chalets nearby.

Drinking
The restaurants and Gasthaus also offer opportunities to just drop in for a beer, wine or Schnaps, as well as, of course, something non-alcoholic.

Shopping
There are several opportunities to buy some of the attractive Austrian national dress (Trachten).
Alternatively Austria's famous gingerbread (Lebkuchen) biscuits and chocolates (Mozart Kugel) are also widely available.
There are also regular Farmer's Markets with delicious Austrian sausages, ham, cheeses, fruits, honey, cakes and other local food directly from the farm.
