The Swiss construction industry is highly developed and very
diverse. The competitive nature of the industry has lead Swiss
companies to specialise in specific areas of the construction
process in order to capture market share. It is therefore not
unusual that a single construction project involves over 40
companies, where each company follows a very specific task.
At the moment the industry employs approximately 480,000 workers
and creates a yearly value added of about 40 billion Swiss francs,
which corresponds to approximately 8% of total GDP.
The recent economic slowdown has particularly contributed to a
reduction in commercial constructions whereas constructions in the
private sector seem not to be affected.
