The Swiss food & drink industry ranks amongst the most
specialised and finest in the world.
In recent years Swiss producers are increasingly concentrating on
exporting their products, as the domestic market is almost
saturated. Since the production costs are high in Switzerland and
the franc is strong Swiss exporters are targeting the high end of
the worldwide market competing on quality rather than on price.
Switzerland's food & drink industry is particularly advanced in
the production of organic and convenience food where it also tries
to service the demand of niche markets.
The industry seems not to be affected by the economic slowdown in
contrast to most other consumer industries in Switzerland. Demand
has remained stable and the industry has even been able to record a
3% growth over the last year. At present the industry has
approximately 6000 employees and generates about 1 billion Swiss
franks per year.
